About Montreal City Hall

The spectacular five-story Second Empire style Montreal City Hall translated in French as Hôtel de Ville de Montreal was designed by Henri-Maurice Perrault and Alexander Hutchison and constructed between 1872-78. The interior of the structure had to be rebuilt after a 1922 fire. Montreal City Hall is a National Historic Site of Canada and was the first building in the country to be constructed only for municipal purposes. Its Hall of Honour and Council Chambers are worth a visit for the fine interior decorations including stained-glass windows and chandeliers.
