Located at the confluence of the Saint-Maurice and Saint Lawrence Rivers is a city that first gained fame as the pulp and paper industry capital of the world. The decline in newsprint changed all that, but it didn't stop Trois-Rivières from expanding into other areas such as the literary arts. Every year in October the city hosts the International Festival of Poetry, and plaques with poetic verses can be found throughout the central business district, testament to the city's new title, the Poetry Capital of Quebec. The city also offers a broad spectrum of outdoor activities: Nordic bathing, ice canoe racing, snow kiting and cross-country skiing in winter, and cycling, sailing, kayaking and river-gazing in summer.
